Do either of your parents have a history of baldness? If so, then you too may be at risk for hair loss. According to studies, the leading cause for hair loss in both men and women is known as male pattern baldness or female pattern baldness. This form of baldness is usually identified by hair loss in the front of the scalp that moves steadily to the back and top of the head.
Thinning of hair and reducing hairline is the usual start for male pattern baldness. General thinning of hair is the female pattern of baldness symptom. These thinning have to be noticed in the back of the head and not the hairline thinning.
Bad hereditary luck is not the only reason for hair loss. A condition known as trichotillomania, or compulsive hair pulling, is known to cause hair loss. This condition usually targets whatever part of the scalp is being pulled on. This condition is usually not cause for serious alarm. Simply stop pulling on the affected areas and the hair will begin to grow back.
One of the more serious conditions for hair loss would be the scarring alopecia. This condition is at risk when certain hair style shows its affect on the hair. One such hair style would be tight braids, this will cause tension on the scalp and this will lead the hair to fall out. Pulling and putting constant pressure on the scalp and the hair follicles will cause inflammation and result in scarring.
Drugs and certain kind of medication can cause hair loss. Certain individuals will experience small percentage of hair loss due to the prescribed medicine, such as the blood thinners and medicines related to heart conditions are some medical treatments that may result in hair loss.
One other medically linked treatment that cause hair loss is chemotherapy. Most of the medicine or drugs used in chemotherapy will make the hair cells stop its division. Thus the hair starts becoming thinner and breaks pushing the hair follicles. The patient of chemotherapy is bound to loss all the hair. But chemotherapy can’t be called as the long term hair loss, as after the treatment is complete the patient will have the hair re grown.
The causes for hair loss include infections as well. There are many infections which will lead to hair loss, one such infection is caused by the ring worm which is the fungal hair loss infection experienced by children. This condition is contagious and should be identified by the circular patches appearing on the scalp. And one more symptom of this infection is that the skin of the infected area will turn into pink scaly looking skin. Anti fungal cream is the treatment for this infection, the cream has to be applied directly to the scalp infected. This infection takes up to 3 weeks to get cured and cleared.
