Hi! I adopted a puppy in June of ‘08 who had demadix mange, swollen lymph nodes, and was recovering from parvo that almost killed him.
this was him at the rescue in May.http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f51/tw…
and this was him when we brought him home:http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f51/tw…
this is him now:http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f51/tw…http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f51/tw…
He still has hair loss on his sides an his legs, and in spots on his head. Occasionally he will still still get itchy and get the bumps. He has been on and off different meds, as well as immune system vitamins and supplemental vitamins for his coat.
So, after nearly 7 months of treatment, it has not fully gone away. Is this normal, and can I ever expect for him to have all of his fur?

Demodex is tough to treat, much harder than sarcoptic mange because it involves the immune system. The good thing is that unlike sarcoptic, it’s not contagious.
Some dogs never fully recover but most do respond to treatment. He definitely looks much healthier now.
He should have been kept on whatever meds he was taking for a minimum of 4 months, preferably 6 mos. nonstop.
You probably should continue the vitamins & other supplements forever. Make sure they include plenty of Omega 3’s. I
t’s also important to feed the highest quality food you possibly can & look for those that have meat (not meat by products) as the first ingredient. Avoid those with corn, wheat gluten & soy & any that use BHA or BHT as preservatives. Same goes for treats.
It would be a really good idea to consult with a veterinary dermatologist.
Sounds like your dog was one of the lucky ones to find such a caring home : ) Best wishes & good luck!

Dogs naturally have demodex mites in their skin. Mange occurs when the demodex mites actually start breeding out of control. When this happens, it can be very difficult to get rid of the mange caused by the demodex mites. Because they burrow, it can be difficult to fully heal and may take a long time. Also, even though it may be healed, the dog will continue to scratch every now and then because of the fur growing back.

My puppy had demodectic mange and she was on a staggered oral ivermectin treatment that cleared hers up quickly. If your pup has a weakened immune system, ivermectin may be too strong. I also used Nu-Stock (available at feed stores, and for a little more money online). It is topical and smells horrible, but it seems to clear up the mange. Just use an e-collar (the cone) to keep the dog from licking, the ointment can cause tummy upset if it is licked off. Kudos for rescuing a sick pup, both of mine have had problems but it is totally worth it to give a dog a better life.

Well he has made terrific progress! I understand what you are going through I rescued both my dogs and they both got this mange. The first we took to the vet which was a heafty bill I’m sure you know! and the second seeing that we already knew what it was I bought this treatment online called Dermisil and is like a mixture you mix with part water and shampoo. You wash him every five days with this until the mix is gone. This worked, seeing that you already have the treatment and vitamins and have done the process, you just have to wait till the hair grows back it may take awhile. Keep doing what you are doing.

Sorry to hear about all the challenges your dog has been through. But you did all the right things and now you want to help him more with the mange and hair growth. BTW thanks for the pix…cute dog, I can see why you want to keep him and make him healthier.
Since the vet can’t help you I did find a resource for you that may help. A friend of mine used this and recommends it highly.
I’m not a distributor or affiliate with this source but I do believe it will answer your question and save you money. See below

I don’t belive demadix mange is cureable, just treatable.

  8. Kip says:

It depends. Talk to your vet, I am sure they can give you better information.

    He’s adorable. I love brindles. =)
While demodex does take some time to treat, 7 months seems a little longer than usual. We usually take 2 or 3 negative skin scrapes before declaring the issue resolved. If you’re unsure about his treatment, speak with your veterinarian to get his/her opinion.
The hair should return, and if it hasn’t – again, speak with your vet to make sure he doesn’t have a secondary condition that’s causing the continued alopecia.
EDIT: If your vet isn’t giving you good answers (or any at all, for that matter), find one that’s willing to take the time to speak with you and address your concerns. Having a skilled veterinarian with a good bedside manner is priceless.

YUCK! Have your vet refer you to a canine internal medicine specialist.
