It sounds weird but place instant grits around the piles. The worker ants will carry the food to feed to the queen. She'll die once she eats it because the grits will swell inside her stomach causing it to rupture. A little trick my grandpa taught me.

Find the nest and pour a massive bowl of boiling water over it. Muwahahaha. Once I found an ants nest, poured lighter fluid down it and shoved a match in. The smell was delightful!

You can buy ant poison from almost anywhere but Woolworths will be a good place to start. The poison is placed in a small round tub with holes in it. The ants then crawl in and feed on the poison (they find it irresistable). The poison does not kill them straight away so the ants go back to the colony and feed the other ants and pass on the poison. It takes about 2 weeks but it works brilliantly. The poison tub should not be placed in direct sunlight as it will dry up. It should also be regularly topped up. You need to repeat the treatment every few weeks.
Do not water your lawn as you are trying to kill of the ants as they will not feed in wet weather, they will stay in the colony where its dry.

Spank them... ant killing powder from all good garden centres should help, it's always worked for me. Are you sure it's the ants that have caused the problems and not some other pest? Sounds a bit strange to me, usually their nests have tiny little openings at ground level and they just disturb the soil over a small area.
