I took fluoxetine for over 2 months, before i stopped, but after a month of firstly taking fluoxetine i noticed my hair thinning on my head. Since i stopped my hair has continued to thin. I went to the doctor, where i had a blood test to check my iron levels, which was all normal.
The funny thing was that the doctor didn’t even know that fluoxetine has a hair loss side effect. its slowly getting worse, and i noticed the top of the head itchy after showers, and shedding of hair after a shower.
Not really sure how to proceeds, any thoughts ????

One Response to “Hair Loss + Fluoxetine?”

Alopecia, though mentioned on the data sheet for fluoxetine is rare enough that I have certainly never come across it. What happens is a process called telogen effluvium. Normally, most hair is in the active growing phase, while a much smaller proportion is in the resting, or telogen, phase. Growing hair pushes the resting hair out. When a medication causes many more hair follicles to enter the resting stage than is usual, there is less hair growing and more to be pushed out — or pulled out, whether by shampooing, brushing and combing, or just running your hands through your hair.
generally the process settles on its own after stopping the Prozac.
