I’ve noticed a small bald patch at the lower end of one of my chickens back. A few days later I noticed the same patch on the same position on one of my other chickens. I was wondering if it was some kind of lice, if you know what has caused these bald patches can you help? Thanks

Have you recently got any new chickens? I’m no expert but this happened to 2 of my chickens because they were new and the other chickens bullied them for a while….as they were “newbies” and all, i guess they just wanted to show them who is boss! x

It could be because the chicken is being pecked at by other chickens. This is what is known as the pecking order when chickens are bullied by other chickens by being pecked at. Your balding chicken may just be lower down in the pecking order.

Hi, Usually this is from pecking each other (hen pecking?) Watch them and see if they are showing aggression towards each other. it may be one specific hen, you should then remove her.

if you have a rooster this is common he will choose his ‘favourite’ hens and they get a little too much action… if you know what i mean. any new hens would also do this to establish a pecking order. it could be that now the weather is warmer they are re-establishing their order and bonds.

I have chickens and that happened to some of mine too. The best answer I can come up with is that when the roosters are breeding the hens, his claws get into her back and pull the feathers out. You start noticing it mainly on the hens that get bred a lot. Hope this helps!
