I have my doubts about this as i have seen brothers and some are bald and some are not. Could someone give a scientific explanation on what determines if you are bald or not?

It’s possible, but less likely then if your father is bald. Usually genetics are inherited from the male side.

  2. fstop says:

The gene for baldness is carried by the “X” chromasome. This is referred to as a “sex linked” characteristic.

The traits we inherit from our ancestors are carried by our chromasomes. Chromasomes come in pairs, one half of each pair from mom, the other half from dad. There are 23 pairs in humans. The chromasomes that determine sex are called X and Y. Males are male because they have one X and one Y. Females are female because the have 2 X’s.

If your grandfater is bald, it is because his one and only X carries the baldness trait. There is no other X to mellow it out. He gave this trait to all of his daughters, but none of his sons, because a man gives either one X or one Y to each of his children. The Y’s are boys, and the Y does not carry baldness. The X’s are girls and must carry his baldness trait, since it is the only X he has to give.

These girls will not necessarily be bald. To be bald, a woman has to have 2 bald X’s. And even then, the response to the gene is affected by hormones like testosterone, and other things. So even with 2 “bald X’s,” a woman is not usually totally bald.

So ultimately, a man gets the bladness gene from his mother because she is the source of his X. If his mother’s father was bald, a boy’s chances are 50% of being bald. If her father was not bald, she may still carry a baldness gene from her mother’s side.

Complicated, I know, but it might help to draw to stick figures. Under one (mamma stick), put 2 X’s. Put a little “b” next to one of those X’s. Under the other, (pappa stick, who in this case, is not bald) put an X and a Y.

Now, near the happy couple, draw 4 stick babies. Put a bald X under two of them. A non-bald X under the other 2. Those came from Mamma Stick. Now Pappa Stick does his part. Give his Y to one each of the bald and the non-bald X’s, and his X to the remaining bald and non-bald X.

We have 4 cute little stick babies. 2 boys and 2 girls. You can see that one of the boys will be bald. The other will not. One of the girls will carry the baldness trait. The other will not.

Real life distribution is rarely that even, but that’s the short course in inheritting the baldness trait!

Try doing some research on baldness. Several factors influence it, and even the genetic part is not simply predictable. Look into what an individual can do to influence their own baldness. Probably the biggest influence is male hormones. If you have the hormones, enjoy them; baldness is a small price to pay.

if ur a guy the risk is quiet more in this case where in the gene from your grandfather passes to your mother.stays recessive and may be expressed in you..but everything is just probability don’t worry..and heredity is not the only risk of getting bald.
