I have a 4 month old Jack Russell Chihuahua puppy, and her hair seems to be thinning on her chest, the top of her head and a little bit around her eyes. The vet said it could be a vitamin deficiency so we fed her puppy vitamins for a few weeks, which didn’t help. My mother says it could be from where she is growing rapidly and her hair isn’t able to keep up and cover all of her. I’m at a loss.

Vet didn’t do a skin scrape for demodex. Most anyvet Ive ever met would do a skin scrape first thing when the hair is thinnning around the eyes.

It could be a deficiancy, in that case, you need to give it more time, A LOT more time. It could also be a medical or skin condition. I would certainly take her to another vet for a second opinion. It isn’t from growing.

It’s not from growing.
–Check for stress
–Keep feeding her vitamins
–Is it too warm in the house?
Ask your vet for some blood tests.

Could be numerous reasons…fleas, dry skin, stress from a new home, nervous, allergies….keep trying different things. Keep close watch on diet and all puupy comes in contact with. Good luck. LL.

Could be mange. Wash the dog with Sulfur 8 Shampoo, it really works!

Have your vet check for a thyroid condition but in such a young pup it seems unlikely but possible. There are thyroid medication that can be given to any dog with thyroid problems but once started they must be given for the life of the dog.
The medication is very inexpensive so it should not deter you, and the pups and the dogs live a very long and healthy life.

We had a daschound/weiner dog that did this. He started loosing his hair as a puppy and when he got to a year old he lost almost all of his hair…He only had a light layer on the rest of his body…We took him to the vet to see what was wrong. It turned out that he had a thyroid problem. So there was really no way to fix his hair loss issue. We had to eventually give him away because he bit someone…But, he is still doing good. He has to have a doggie sweater on when he is outside when it’s cold.

could be hypothyroidism. Is she eating lots but not gaining any weight? That is another clinical sign as well. (or it could be eating little and gaining. One of the two.)

It’s likely the dry winter weather that’s causing the hair loss.
If you are feeding a good quality dogfood, and the vet has ruled out mange, add some Omega 3 oils to her diet and help to get rid of some of the dryness. Puppies do lose their coat, and get an adult coat, likely the dryness and the coat change are happening at the same time.
