Question by Wendy Smith: What exactly does hair loss shampoo do?

Best answer:

Answer by Tiffany Brown
There are several different types of shampoos depending on other conditions like color treated hair, mature hair etc, so they vary slightly; however, the basic idea is for the shampoo to clean the scalp in a manner that does not further damage the scalp or block the follicles, leaving the scalp fresh to produce new hair, almost like a clean canvas. Some shampoos clear away damaging impurities caused by environmental factors or product buildup, while others try to stimulate hair cells for new hair growth.
The overall idea is to treat the scalp as you would your exposed skin and to protect it as much as possible in ways to keep it healthy. A healthy scalp will result in healthier hair.
The best hair loss products are made by Nioxin. They have many hair types to choose from so I would start by picking your type of hair and go from there.

My first recommendation is to get a second opinion from another Doctor. I am an expert in hair loss, and I have no idea why a product from a horse’s mane would promote hair growth. For pattern baldness, it is best to stick with what we know works.

Finasteride is a prescription medication (sold as Propecia in the USA) that is a DHT blocker. DHT is the primary cause for male pattern baldness, and is just a hormone our bodies produce naturally (our bodies make more as we age). Finasteride is a fairly potent inhibitor of DHT, and stops hair loss in 9 out of 10 men. About 8 out of 10 men will even regrow hair. The downside is you need a prescription.

The second most effective hair loss treatment is minoxidil. Minoxidil is also a DHT inhibitor, but unlike finasteride, it is a topical solution that you put on your head. It is commonly sold as Rogaine, Kirkland, Provillus, or a generic brand. It works in about 8 out of 10 men, with few side effects. Minoxidil comes in two strengths 5% (best for men) and 2% (best for women).

The third most effective hair loss treatment is natural supplements or vitamins. You need to be careful with these, because a lot of people market them as miracle cures, and they are not. The most effective ones are saw palmetto, vitamin B6, and Biotin. They only work in about 6 out of 10 men, but are a good option if you do not want to take a prescription or mess with putting minoxidil on your head. You can buy them individually, or as a multi-vitamin.

The most important thing to remember in treating your hair loss is to start early. It is much easier to keep what you have!

Question by Snowflake: Anyone know a remedy to stop/reduce hair loss for men?
There is a pile of stuff in drugstores that claims to stop the boldness… It is also known that boldness is hereditary. Did anyone try something that they believe worked? My brother needs it… He’s 29, and his hair is falling out like crazy in last 3 months. He’s under a lot of stress now, too. Anyone, help please? He already pretty much gave up on it, but it would be sweet if he kept more of his hair than less.

Question by volumetwo: Is is true that minoxidil is not as effective as propecia in treating male-pattern hair loss?

Don’t waste your money on either of them. You won’t grow a full head of hair. It will be so thinly distributed you might as well be bald.

The sulfates you find in a lot of non-organic branded shampoo promote hair loss – so check that out before you put anything on your hair!
