Do either of your parents have a history of baldness? If so, then you too may be at risk for hair loss. According to studies, the leading cause for hair loss in both men and women is known as male pattern baldness or female pattern baldness. This form of baldness is usually identified by hair loss in the front of the scalp that moves steadily to the back and top of the head.

Thinning of hair and reducing hairline is the usual start for male pattern baldness. General thinning of hair is the female pattern of baldness symptom. These thinning have to be noticed in the back of the head and not the hairline thinning.

Bad hereditary luck is not the only reason for hair loss. A condition known as trichotillomania, or compulsive hair pulling, is known to cause hair loss. This condition usually targets whatever part of the scalp is being pulled on. This condition is usually not cause for serious alarm. Simply stop pulling on the affected areas and the hair will begin to grow back.

One of the more serious conditions for hair loss would be the scarring alopecia. This condition is at risk when certain hair style shows its affect on the hair. One such hair style would be tight braids, this will cause tension on the scalp and this will lead the hair to fall out. Pulling and putting constant pressure on the scalp and the hair follicles will cause inflammation and result in scarring.

Drugs and certain kind of medication can cause hair loss. Certain individuals will experience small percentage of hair loss due to the prescribed medicine, such as the blood thinners and medicines related to heart conditions are some medical treatments that may result in hair loss.

One other medically linked treatment that cause hair loss is chemotherapy. Most of the medicine or drugs used in chemotherapy will make the hair cells stop its division. Thus the hair starts becoming thinner and breaks pushing the hair follicles. The patient of chemotherapy is bound to loss all the hair. But chemotherapy can’t be called as the long term hair loss, as after the treatment is complete the patient will have the hair re grown.

The causes for hair loss include infections as well. There are many infections which will lead to hair loss, one such infection is caused by the ring worm which is the fungal hair loss infection experienced by children. This condition is contagious and should be identified by the circular patches appearing on the scalp. And one more symptom of this infection is that the skin of the infected area will turn into pink scaly looking skin. Anti fungal cream is the treatment for this infection, the cream has to be applied directly to the scalp infected. This infection takes up to 3 weeks to get cured and cleared.

Admit it. There was a point in your life when you did show some concern over whether you were eventually going to lose your hair like a lot of other guys you know. You may even already be showing some signs of male hair loss. Don’t panic, your condition is probably normal and non-life threatening but you don’t necessarily have to live with it.

Male Pattern Baldness

There are several types of hair loss conditions. However, it has been discovered that around 95% of hair loss conditions are categorized under androgenetic alopecia. We often think that male hair loss begins when a man reaches adulthood. It is possible however for some to begin having the condition during the teen years. The first sign of thinning and male hair loss is often observed in the temple areas. In time though, true male hair loss may eventually result in complete bald areas typically on the crown or top of the head.

Cause

From the term androgenetic alone, we can see that it comes from “andro” which means hormones and “genetic” which means genes. This means that most male hair loss cases can be inherited hormone initiated conditions. Men who suffer from hair loss actually inherit a certain sensitivity to the hormonal reactions that lead to male hair loss.

The pattern of hair loss begins when the male hormone testosterone comes into contact with the enzyme 5-alpha reductase. Testosterone is then converted to dihydrotestosterone (DHT). It is DHT that gets into hair follicles and binds with receptors. It will then begin to hamper the function of hair follicles, causing them to shrink and preventing them from producing new healthy hair strands.

Common Treatments

So far, the most effective kind of treatment for hair loss are surgical procedures. A surgeon may have to move some hair strands from a well covered area to the bald spot. Other procedures include reducing the bald scalp area or increasing the area of the scalp which still has hair. Depending on the kind of surgery you may have to undergo, your doctor may have to look into your suitability as a surgery candidate. Factors that may affect your suitability for male hair loss surgery include your age, type of hair and hair color.

Another option would be to take medications. A popular kind of medication blocks DHT or 5-alpha reductase. As some users would point out though, some medications may produce side effects and hair growth may not be so quick. The quality of hair growth is also not always as desired.

Alternative Treatment

The third alternative would be to take supplements. Men can now take natural, herbal supplements to promote hair growth. Natural products are a good choice if you do not want to spend too much on surgery or if you do not want to experience the side effects of medication. A lot of these natural products also function as DHT and enzyme blockers, thus effectively reducing male hair loss. Natural ingredients such as saw palmetto have been known as effective blockers. Another plus factor to natural supplementation is that you also get a lot of nourishment for your scalp and hair.

Anyone can prevent or cure male hair loss. It’s just a matter of looking for the right product.
