Question by Lex: So what do you think of an Albino Cockatiel without a bald spot?
Is this unusual? I know this is a desired trait, but how hard is it to come by? Should I keep this bird, or sell it? I raise cockatiels. I purchased these birds seperately and paired them together not knowing any backgrounds, and the hen (Albino) has a bald spot, but produces some Albinos that do and some that do not. What do you think?

Question by I’d like to Know…..: Why does our cockatiel have a bald spot running down the back of his head?
Hi, my husband and I just rescued a cockatiel from this family. He was never taken to the vet, he never had toys in his cage, and the lady said that her children would knock down the cage with him in it. We are taking him to the veterinarian tomorrow, although he has this bald spot on the back of his head. The past owner said that he rubs his head against the cage. We are very worried and so upset he was not taken good care of! Does anyone know what this bald spot might be caused from?
I have a male cockatiel. He has been with no other cockatiels or birds as far as I know. He is a lutino cockatiel.
His past owner said that he didn’t have his bald spot when she got him, but that in the past months it has become bald. Could the hair missing from the bald spot grow back in that area?

I suspect that you have a yellow or lutino cockatiel.
Most of the paler coloured cockatiels have a bald spot under their crest and under the wings.
If you have a grey it may be a female that has been with a male for a while, the males sometimes pluck feathers from the back of the females head during mating.
I own a pet store and have been breeding these birds for hand rearing for twenty years.

Question by Malakeh: Would a 3 month old Lutino Cockatiel start to grow hair on his bald patch behind the crest of his head?
I just bought a 3 month old Lutino Cockatiel today. And I noticed that he has a bald spot on top of his head. I heard that it is normal for there kind of breed. but I was wondering if anyone knows, if there is still a strong chance that the bird would still grow some more hair in that bald spot, since it is still a baby?

I heard a bald spot on the back of the head is a common genetic fault that occurs in that specific mutation.

I just got my new baby cockatiel just a couple of hours ago. My question is how long does it take for a cockatiels feathers to come in completely? She’s about 2 months old and has a small bald spot on the top of her head. She also has some little patches where there’s little feathers. Is this normal? Also she hasn’t really sang or talked since she came? Aren’t they suppose to be loud? Or is she just scared?
