I have suffered from hair loss at the age of 16. I probably have suffered the most common types of baldness in men, Male Pattern Baldness. Male Pattern Baldness is also known as Androgenetic Alopecia (Alopecia is the more general medical name for hair loss). Although there are many types of hair loss, it has been discovered that around 95% of hair loss conditions in men are categorized under Androgenetic Alopecia.

The term Androgenetic consists of 2 parts, “Andro” and “Genetic”. “Andro” means hormones and “Genetic” means genes. This means that most male hair loss cases can be initiated by inherited hormone in their bodies. Men who suffer from hair loss actually inherit a certain sensitivity to the hormonal reactions that lead to male hair loss.

It is good for us (hair loss sufferers) to understand when the pattern of hair loss begins to form. The pattern of hair loss begins to form when the male hormone testosterone comes into contact with the enzyme 5-alpha reductase. Testosterone is then converted to dihydrotestosterone (DHT). It is DHT that gets into hair follicles and binds with receptors. It will then begin to hamper the function of hair follicles, causing them to shrink and preventing them from producing new healthy hair strands. This DHT will continue to damage the hair follicles by blocking essential nutrients from going to the scalp and will cause the hair to start falling out rapidly as time passes.
