Question by Evergreen: Typhoid treatment. Did my doctor abuse me?
A few months back I was diagnosed for Typhoid and according to the instructions of a reputed Doctor who was also like a friend to me (more like a family doctor coz he lived in my neighborhood) was admitted in the hospital were he practiced. My sister was my bystander. The first few days during his rounds he came to me and asked me how I was feeling and then palpated my stomach area and went. During the second last day in the hospital, as usual he came during his rounds accompanied with a nurse to inspect me. My sister was not there since she had to go for an urgent meeting in her office. Doctor had asked me were she was and I told him she would come back in the evening since she had to go to office urgently. He cut short some medicines in the prescription and said I am alright and can leave after one more day and left the room.

To my surprise the doctor returned to my room after about say 20 minutes and closed the door. This time he was alone. He said he was busy during his rounds and he could not instruct me properly. He then started to inspect my stomach, pressed it in deep and asked me if I felt any pain. Later he said that since I was on heavy dose treatment for Typhoid, there are chances that the medicines create some lump sort of formation on my breasts. He asked me if I was having hair-loss from my pubic area.Telling this he asked me to unhook my bra and he slid both his hand under my churidhar top (one from the neck portion and the other from the stomach side) and started what he called palpating my breasts. I was feeling more uncomfortable when he did it with my nipples. He spend almost two minutes doing this and then retired. He asked me to continue doing this on my own for next few days since chances are that I might develop these lumps due to side effect of the medicines.

My questions are:
1) Did my Doctor abuse me? Did he take undue advantage of his profession or is he genuine?
2) Is there a chance for Typhoid/ Typhoid treatment side effect- to form Lumps on female breasts?
3) What should I do now if he had done this to me on purpose? I am an unmarried woman and don’t want to get into controversies which would affect my regular life.

Serious and sincere guidelines are requested…Please help

What your doctor did was so unprofessional that I am at a loss for words. No decent or responsible male doctor EVER examines a female patient without another female in the room. I’m not aware of any medication used to treat Typhoid that causes lumps in the breasts to form. I would not ever let that doctor lay hands on you ever again, under any circumstances. So far as what you should do, for a start, you should tell your parents and report this matter to the hospital where you were a patient. I’d also tell any other females you know that he did this, and to ensure they never allow him to examine them without another female in the room with them. You can also stop a doctor from continuing with any exam, especially if it makes you feel uncomfortable. Never ever let a doctor of either sex do a hands-on exam without insisting you have a chaperone in the room with you. That’s the best way to protect yourself in the future. While I understand you wish not to disrupt your normal life over this, you must consider that you are most likely NOT the first woman he has done this to, and will not be the last unless you do speak up. Unless you want some other young girl taken advantage of in the way you were, you will warn people. They can choose to believe you or not, but at least you will have the satisfaction of knowing you were not a silent victim, and you did all you could. I’m so sorry this happened to you. It shouldn’t have. Unfortunately, even in the medical profession, there are disgusting individuals who take advantage of their trusted positions.

If youre seeing hairloss at around 20 years of age, you will be bald and no drugs work for it. Ive tried them all and I’m 52. Nutrition doesnt seem to help either.

Question by sweetness_n_passion: to what doctor do i need to go for my hair loss?
Im a woman and 19 yrs old and I am losing my hair like crazy, i barely have any anymore. I’d like to know what doctor i need to go to for the treatment of my hair loss. I was thinking of going to a dermatologist, but what if the problem is not on my scalp? will a dermatologist also perform blood tests to rule out the chances of anemia or other physical reasons for my hair loss?….or will they only examine my scalp?

what kind of doctor will perform tests on me to rule out all the possible causes ( blood test and scalp) will a regular general physcian do this or a dermatologist?

will appreciate knowledgeable answers
thank you :)
my hair loss is not only in certain spots (im not getting bald spots) it’s thinning and falling off from everywhere
i had this problem before i got pregnant but while pregnancy my hair stopped falling so much. the hair loss returned a few months after childbirth (about 3 months ago) and is now worst than ever

Just go to your regular dr. first. She/he will be able to examine you and run the appropriate labs in order to determine if you need a specialist and which one to send you to if you do.

Just FYI ’cause I’m a big nerd, here’s a few things that cause alopecia(hair loss) along with other symptoms you might watch for.

Medications that cause alopecia: warfarin, heparin, propylthiouracil, carbimazole, lithium, beta blockers, colchicine, & isotretinoin.
-Telogen effluvium: diffuse hair loss following major stress, high fever, severe infections, hormone changes, post-partum.
-Alopecia areata: hair follicles are attacked by T lymphocytes, usually seen in hyper or hypothyroidism, vitiligo, & down’s syndrome. Characteristics include circular areas of hair loss & pitting of fingernails.
-Tinea capitis: aka cradle cap, cased by the dermatophyte Trichophyton tonsurans. This infection can lead to scaling lesions on the scalp, patches of hair loss with stubble/broken hairs, and/or plaque formations with pustules(little bumps that look like pimples).
-Androgenic allopecia: hair loss due to ovarian or adrenal gland dysfunction. Associated symptoms include deepened voice, clitoris enlargement, changes in skin, decreased breast tissue, & facial hair.
-Lupus erythmatosus: may result in diffuse hair loss/involves the entire scalp or only invove the frontal scalp.

Question by pdddd: If spironolactone is used to treat hair loss then why did my doctor prescribe it to me?
I have increased testosterone levels and have hair growth on my face (like on the sides, nothing compared to a man growing a beard) but obviously more hair than a woman should have. If spironolactone is used for hair loss treatment, why would my doctor prescribe it to help stop the extra hair growth…? yes, i know ask my doctor but clearly at midnight i cannot call my doctor and ask

Spironolactone is a potassium-sparing diuretic occasionally used to treat hirsutism but not hair loss. Your doctor apparently doesn’t do as good a job as you at getting things backwards.
