On October 11 of this year, I was diagnosed as having a serum ferritin level of less than one. As of late November, it was up to a 5. Since then, I have upped my iron dosage (Ferrous Sulfate 5 gr/325 mg) to 3 pills daily per my doctor’s advice and have been consciously trying to eat more iron rich foods. I am a vegetarian, so I’ve been eating black bean soup or lentil soup daily, as well as pumpkin and sunflower seeds. I try to snack on Total cereal, which has 100% of iron DV and take a daily multi-vitamin, which also has 100%. I eat Kashi cereal with soy milk for breakfast every morning. Question: Why, if my ferritin is slowly creeping up, is my hair falling out more? With ferritin that low, can you really overdose on iron with my diet? Are the non-heme iron sources I’m eating actually inhibiting my iron absorbtion? Any insight would be greatly appreciated as I am truly afraid I will go bald if things keep going at this rate! Tags: Ferritin, hair, LossMy hair loss began 3 years ago and sometime later my nails have started to look bad. I am not shedding as much now, but my nails will not grow long at all and look horrible. Nails peel, split, and have a red band at the top – Does anyone have any information about taking iron to improve hair and nails? I am also taking Hair, skin, nails vitamin and have been for two years but nails and hair have not really improved. Tags: Ferritin, hair, Levels, Nails |
