Question by Kevin S: Is there any evidence that head and shoulders causes hair loss? Also alternatives?
I have been told by a friend of mine that head and shoulders causes hair loss. Is this true? Is there anything bad about using a dandruff shampoo every day?

I am currently using the Wal-Mart knockoff brand (equate) of the shampoo (active ingredient pyrithione zinc, which I believe is the same has head and shoulders), would it change anything?

Also, what are some quality alternatives to head and shoulders (just regular shampoo, not dandruff)?

Thanks for your help.
By the way, I used to have pretty bad dandruff problems that have since been resolved with head and shoulders.

Question by leantallamazon: does head lice cause hair loss?
Yes, head lice does cause hair loss! I am a mixed (black and white) woman who probably had head lice for years without realizing because it is assumed that black people (I have black hair) don’t get head lice which is a farce! I thought the nits were dandruff and I thought the itch was just a normalcy! Wow The only reason I found out I had head lice is because I actually saw the bugs!!!!
I braided my hair with extensions, (the packs of hair has bugs in them so if you are braiding, you should wash the hair thoroughly) and upon completion of braiding my hair, I noted the back of my neck burning and then an itch that was undescribable. When I removed the braids, I noted white looking bugs for which I tried some home remedies. The olive oil DOES work in that it calms the itching and biting. The olive oil is a natural deterant for these little bastards and I think it kills the adults. However, the olive oil just wasn’t working overall in the removal process. I got drastic and put bleach on a wash cloth and preceded to scrub my scalp with the washcloth and lo and behold, I noted that white balls were coming off my scalp and became noticeable (thousands, ughhhhhh) in my hair and on the wash cloth for which I removed them (eggs) As you rub your scalp, rinse out the nits, bleach add water and scrub some more. I continued this process until I didn’t see any more eggs. When you do this process, you can actually feel the eggs on your scalp with your fingers. There is some kind of sticky stuff attached to the egss and to your scalp! The process is drastic but it worked like a charm. However, it does cause some burning and irritation. I waited for two-three days and did the process again because I knew I had missed some (eggs).

I don’t recommend using this remedy on children, especially under the age of 12 but whatever works as the lice were making my life a living hell because the scratching became very noticeable and because I knew what was going on, my personality changed dramatically.

After I washed my hair the second time after the bleach procedure, I noted bald patches. Particulary around the nape of my neck and my edges. Prior to my realizing that I had head lice and the lice episode, I thought I was having alopecia problems but my hair is growing back in those areas which I think was due to the fact that so many eggs were laid and this cut off proteins or what ever to my hair shaft.

Therefore, from living this experience, lice does cause hair loss but this procedure definitely works!!!!!

I believe you that having head lice for years might cause some bald spots but I bet it was really made worse by you putting household bleach on your head. I’m glad it worked for you but it would make a white person bald. Literally bald. Our hair cannot have household bleach on it. I had boyfriend that tried it once (because he was stupid and he thought when people talked about “bleaching” their hair they were using household bleach). His hair fell out and he had chemical burns all over his head. So, while I’m glad this worked for you I think it’s a REALLY bad idea for people who aren’t black.

Question by JDog: Are there any new treatments for alopecia areata or alopecia universalis-eyebrow and head hair loss?

Best answer:

Answer by Bill
I don’t know if there are any new hair loss treatments but there are existing alopecia treatments that you may not know about. Consider checking out a website that reviews hair loss treatments for people with thinning hair. Any good comparison site will offer info about thegoods needed to treat hair loss.

Answer by Amanda J
it’s a natural thing. yu can try prescriptions or bosley hair restoration, but more than likely if it’s happening so quickly, it’s just going to keep on. own your new look. be confident, and it will be fine.
