Question by Bonnie Kessel: Medicine or treatment for hair loss?
My mom has hypothyroidism and is on medicine that is causing her hair to constantly fall out. It’s so sad to see her like this because she is still a young going mom and it makes her so upset to see her hair come out in clumps. Anyone know of any good vitamin, hair treatment, etc that might help with her problem?
propecia has only been approved by the FDA for use in men.

I have done some research and there does not seem to be a mximum length you can take, there are some interesting side effects though…

“Possible side effects that have been identified with Propecia (Finasteride) include decreased libido, erectile dysfunction, decreased volume of ejaculate, breast tenderness and enlargement; rashes, itching and swelling of the lips and face; and testicular pain. ”

I’d prefer not to have these!! I did come across a natural remedy during my research, www.bring-my-hair-back.com looks great maybe consider this instead?

Good Luck!

Question by I have ideas…: Cat on medicine for over active thyroid -now has hair loss?
I plan on calling the vet tomorrow, so please, no reprimands! Our very old cat (21 years) has been on medicine for an overactive thyroid for some time now. It is a transdermal med as she cannot stomach the oral version. I started to notice some thinning hair on her back near the tail about a month ago. It wasn’t bad and she has very long hair. Tonight, I noticed a significant bald spot on her back near her tail. Does this sound like the thyroid med is dosed too high and causing an under-active thyroid? I think she’s gained a little weight too – which would logically point to too much medicine. She seems otherwise normal. Input appreciated. Thanks!

The vet should be able to reassure you. If the cat is acting normally, then you may have to accept the fact that hair loss and weight gain are the trade-off for treatment that is saving your cat’s life.
Thyroid medications often result in hair loss, both in humans and in animals. Depending on the type, the hair loss may be permanent. Weight gain is also due to the medication.
Good luck to you both. I hope the cat has several comfortable years ahead of her.

Question by Charity Jones: What are the neg side effects of using provilllus (Hair loss medicine for female hair loss?
Let me hear from some of you who have used this product. I’m a female with some balding in the top. I’ve had this problem in past but it’s been almost 20years ago. But, sudden it’s back. Help, Help, Help.
Wearing a wig not an option for me. I’d rather shave my head.

I don’t know that product but I do know that with some you have to always use it.
Have you ever used Nioxin shampoo and hair treatment? This is a product that will help, but won’t grow back major balding. Sometimes when hair just starts to go, it’s because the follicles get clogged and the nioxin can help with that. It has also been know to get hair growing again. Check out the website.
