Chapter One
I heard voices around me. I couldn’t understand quite what they were saying. The voices sounded familiar, but I couldn’t make out who they were. I tried to lift my eyelids. They were as heavy as bricks. Was I dead?
I started to hear a women’s voice. I tried to concentrate on what she was saying. “Will he be ok Dr. Ronalds?” she asked.
“Yes he will be perfectly fine. He may have some memory loss, but that should clear up over time,” a gruff voice replied.
After I heard this little conversation, I blacked out.
I woke up. It felt like I had been asleep for years. My eyes opened slowly and tiredly and looked around the room. I was in a hospital bed with girls of all ages around me looking excitedly as if I was a new species of animal that they had discovered. “Hello?” I managed to say.
“Hello!” all five of them said at once. One dropped a cell phone that she was texting on to the ground. I guessed she was around seventeen. “Are you ok?” a woman in her mid-thirties asked.
“Umm…I think?” Who were these people? They seemed so excited to see me, and I didn’t know any of them. There were two younger girls, I guessed around eleven or twelve. There were also two teenagers. The one that dropped her cell phone looked older than the other one, which I guessed was fifteen or sixteen.
“Can you remember anything?” The older one said. I noticed her curly red hair, identical to the Cell Phone Girl’s.
“Not really,” I replied.
“Oh, sweetie!” the oldest woman cried.
“Uh…I’m sorry but… who are you all?” I had to ask sometime, even if it was weird.
“Oh! Right! Sorry! I am your mother, Jesse. This is your youngest sister, Sara,” she pointed towards the girl with dirty blonde hair. “And this is your friend, S-”
“Serena!” I interrupted. The name just popped into my mind and out of my mouth. I didn’t understand what I was saying. I looked at her. Looked at her encouraging smile and her long black hair.
“You remember me!” Serena sang as she pushed through Cell Phone Girl and my mom to get to me and gave me a hug.
“Well, sorta,” I told her truthfully. All I remembered about her was that her name was Serena.
She still had a big smile on her face. “Still,” it was almost a whisper. I smiled back.
A doctor came into the room. “Ah, I see you have woken up. Can you tell me your name?” he asked me.
My name? What is my name? “Um…No I can’t,” What happened to me? What could make me forget my name?
“Hmm… You won’t remember much for awhile. How much time I can’t say. Your name is Chris. Chris Lameeto,” the doctor said.
“Can we go home Dr. Ronalds?” my mom asked.
“Well, is there someone to help him remember everything? At home and school and such?” Ronalds replied.
Before my mom could reply Serena said, “I would make sure he doesn’t get into any trouble, at school, and his sister,” Selena pointed to Cell Phone Girl, “she would take care of him at home.”
Take care of me? Am I sick? Is that why I can’t remember anything?
Dr. Ronalds thought for a second, and then he agreed.
Before we left, Dr. Ronalds told us that I may occasionally have headaches. I didn’t mind though. On the way home I learned the names of my other sisters, that I was on the basketball team, and that I had been asleep for four days straight.
When I got home, I went straight to my room and fell asleep. Even though I had slept for the last ninety-six hours, I felt like I hadn’t slept in years!
Once I woke up, I put on a yellow shirt with brown sleeves, and a pair of black jeans. I looked at a mirror and learned something, I had long brown hair! How had I not noticed that before?
After my discovery I went downstairs and ate a bowl of cereal. It had a very bland taste. I ate half of it then threw the rest into the sink. After that I heard the doorbell ring. I was about to get it but I suddenly my head started throbbing and everything went blurry. Then I fainted.
The doorbell rang and Serena came in. “Oh, hey Serena. What’s up?” she usually didn’t barge in like that unless she was mad. Uh-oh. This isn’t going to be good.
“I need to talk to you Chris,” she demanded. Yup, I was in trouble.
“Can it wait? I have a date and-”
“No! It can’t wait! We need to talk now,” she practically screamed. What did I do this time? It couldn’t be good.
“ Ok, ok, what do you want to talk about?” maybe I can get out of trouble! Just agree to everything and say sorry.
“Well, on Saturday you said you got dumped by her and I thought that maybe…”
“Chris!” I heard Serena call. My eyes opened slowly and I saw her brown eyes close to mine. Her beautiful brown eyes.
“You’re awake!” Serena yelled joyously. Was that a dream? It seemed so real. Oh well, I would have to remember it. It could be useful in the future.
“Yeah,” I groaned, “what happened?” my head was still throbbing.
“I don’t know, I just came in and found you on the ground, unconscious. Are you ok? Will you be able to come to school today?”
