Question by blazer1183: How does baldness come from the maternal side of the family if the sons of bald men are often bald?
On my mother’s side of the family, her father and brother are bald, and one of her brothers has a bald patch on the back of his head. On my father’s side, nobody has been bald in any recent generation.

Every time I meet a bald person, it seems like they have a bald father, not a bald maternal grandfather.

How likely is it that I will go bald if my maternal grandfather and uncles are bald?
Oh, and my maternal great-grandfather was also bald, and his son (my grandfather) and grandsons (my uncles) are bald.

well im only 18 and starting to thin out a bit, every guy on my mothers side of my family went bald, but my dad is 55 and has a full head of hair and is just starting to grey. but you have to remember most men go bald so its very likley that bald mens fathers would also be bald it just might of happened differently.

And i would guess that you will most likely go bald if all of those guys did.

I know that male pattern baldness comes from a gene passed from the mother’s father. My father was bald. My son wants to know if there is anything he can do while he still has a full head of hair, rather than waiting until he is bald. Are there any new drugs or homeopathic remedies that help to slow or stop the hair thinning caused by male pattern baldness?

I recently met a couple of 40 something, highly attractive women, both of whose adult sons (19 and 24 respectively) were losing their hair to some degree. I was interested to find out what women in this position thought- were you upset on your sons’ behalfs, did you discuss it with them, and did you feel it unusual that what is usually a sign of ageing occurring in their own sons while they themselves retained their looks at nearly 50. Let me know
